Foreign Affairs

As a sovereign nation, the Principality of Sylvestria maintains active engagement with other nations as well as regional and international organizations. The principal objectives of the Bureau of Foreign Affairs are threefold: safeguard the sovereignty and independence of the Principality of Sylvestria, cultivate relationships with other nations, organizations, and peoples, and improve the world by promoting peace, cooperation and coexistence.

Statement on Sovereignty

The Principality of Sylvestria is a sovereign nation with a defined territory, permanent population, and functioning government in accordance with Article 1 of the 1933 Montevideo Convention on the Rights and Duties of States.  As noted in Article 3 of the same, the political existence of the Principality of Sylvestria is "independent of recognition by other states."

Our small nation is not recognized by any members of the United Nations, including our neighbor, the United States of America. We nevertheless maintain de facto control over our claimed territory, govern our population, and seek to enter into relations with other states, nations, organizations, and peoples.

Foreign Policy

As a sovereign nation, the Principality of Sylvestria maintains active engagement with other nations as well as regional and international organizations. We welcome inquiries from all, however, the Principality of Sylvestria will only entertain formal relations with nations meeting the following minimum guidelines:

1) A stable and active government in existence for at least one year

2) A clearly defined territorial claim not in conflict with that of other nations with which Sylvestria maintains formal relations.

Current Activities and Objectives

On August 30, 2024, eight letters announcing the existence of the Principality of Sylvestria were mailed to various Heads of State. Those addressed were Pope Francis, President Joseph R. Biden of the United States of America, King Norodom Sihamoni of Cambodia, King Letsie III of Lesotho, President Halla Tómasdóttir of Iceland, President Javier Milei of Argentina, President Salva Kiir Mayardit of South Sudan, and Emperor Naruhito of Japan.

The Director General made Sylvestria's first official diplomatic visit abroad when he traveled to the Republic of Molossia on August 17, 2024. Governments interested in hosting the Director General for a formal or informal diplomatic visit should contact us to discuss the details. In order to promote Sylvestrian interests and establish relations with other nations, members of our government will attend Microcon 2025 in Montreal. The Bureau of Foreign Affairs is especially interested in entering into trade agreements with other North American micronations.
